Puerto Vallarta, which got its city status in 1968, is located between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the crystal waters and golden beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Located in Banderas Bay, it was originally just a small fishing village called Las Peñas. Its claim to fame is that its cobbled streets were used in the 1960s film the “The Night of the Iguana,” which was a John Huston movie adaptation of a Tennessee Williams play. The majority of the movie starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr was filmed on the set that can still be visited at the Mismaloya beach town south of the city. During filming Elizabeth Taylor joined Burton, playing out their love affair on Puerto Vallarta’s cobbled streets until the pair finally purchased property in the town, making it their vacation home.
